BEN SETH
Hi, I'm Ben Seth, the founder of Caretaker Advocates and author of everything on this site. I'm credentialed with a Master's Degree in Life Lessons from the School of Hard Knocks.
I have an up close and personal view of Profound Autism... I'm talking about the non-verbal, non-toilet trained, 24/7 care kind of profound autism. And I hate it.
I knew from very early on that it is not a gift, it is a disability. And yet all of the social media groups, articles, and organizations that I found seemed to be telling quite a different story.... Autism is something to be revered, honored, respected, and catered to.
At the end of a very long and excruciating journey, Profound Autism destroyed my health, wiped out much of who I used to be, and almost obliterated my marriage. When people told me how smart my child was, how sweet, how cute, I wanted to punch them in the face and tell them to try watching her for a few months. My spouse and I didn't agree on anything. Our stress levels were through the roof. Our life was in shambles. And my profoundly autistic daughter? She had no idea who we were and couldn't care less who was watching her.
For a very long time all I could manage to do with my life was simply try to find the strength to keep on getting up in the mornings. I felt like shit for being the only person I knew who thought Autism was destructive and dangerous for the rest of the family, you know, the mentally-sound people that our Western Society cares nothing about anymore.
If you resonate with this, please don't give up. You're not alone. And it's not just me who's in the same boat. There are thousands of people drowning from taking care of profound disabilities, and Caretaker Advocates is here to help you find non-mainstream perspectives and connect with other caregivers in similar situations. I realized that even though I couldn't change my past, perhaps I could help others avoid the lies and propaganda that had destroyed my family because I blindly believed what society told me. I realized that society has it all backwards: It's the mentally-sound people that are being destroyed by autism (and other disabilities).
You should also know: I am a Christian. But probably not the kind you grew up around. I hate church buildings, Christianese vocabulary, and Christmas trees. I believe in the unadulterated Bible, including the book of Enoch, Jubilees, and many other books that are historically reliable and yet have been taken away from us by our "leaders". Some of what I write about has spiritual and biblical aspects to it, but when that is the case I indicate it at the top of the article. Feel free to read it or skip over it as you see fit.
